How your votes stay anonymous

When you vote, two separate things happen. We record that you voted on that question, so you can't vote twice. Separately, we add one to the total for your chosen answer. We never store a link between you and the answer you chose, so nobody, including us, can look up how you voted. Nominations work the same way.

So that the app can show which answer you picked, your own choice is remembered only on your device, in your browser's storage. It is never sent to us. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Political and other sensitive opinions

Some questions ask about politics or other sensitive topics. Under UK law, political opinions are a "special category" of personal data that needs extra protection. Ayes is designed so that we never hold a record of your opinions:

Who we share data with

We use a small number of trusted service providers to run Ayes. They process data only on our instructions:

ProviderWhat they doWhere
SupabaseDatabase, sign-in and the weekly email listEuropean Union (Ireland)
NetlifyHosts the websiteGlobal network, company based in the USA
Cloudflare (Turnstile)The "I'm not a robot" check at sign-inGlobal network, company based in the USA

Where data leaves the UK, it is protected by safeguards recognised under UK law, such as the UK–US Data Bridge or standard contractual clauses. We never sell your data, and we don't share it with advertisers or sponsors. Sponsors only ever see overall results, never who voted or how.

Sharing

When you use a Share button, the app opens your phone's own share menu (or copies a link). We don't see who you share with.

Cookies and tracking

We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. The app uses your browser's storage to keep you signed in, to remember your own answers on your device, and to remember small preferences (such as hiding the "add to home screen" tip). These are needed for the app to work. The robot check at sign-in may also use your browser's storage to work.

How long we keep it

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you can ask us to:

Email privacy@ayesapp.com and we'll respond within one month. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We'd appreciate the chance to sort it out first.

Age

Ayes is for people aged 16 and over. If you're under 16, please don't sign up.

Keeping data safe

Your data is encrypted in transit (https), the database only lets people see their own records, and votes can only be cast through a secure function that keeps choices separate from people. No system is perfectly secure, but we take care to collect as little as possible in the first place.

Changes to this policy

If we make important changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, let you know by email.
